Event Details

Formerly known as the Saddleback Memorial Half Marathon, the newly renamed City of Laguna Hills Memorial Half Marathon & 5K celebrated its 10th annual running in 2008, welcoming more than 2,500 runners and walkers for what has become a Memorial Day tradition in this Southern California city that has been made perhaps most famous in recent years by the MTV television show Laguna Beach. Both scenic and challenging, the race offers plenty of rolling hills as well as a three-mile stretch through Laguna Hills' Aliso and Wood Canyon Park.

Run entirely on paved surfaces through Laguna Hills' city streets, the race features a point-to-point course that starts at the Saddleback Memorial Medical Center near the Laguna Hills Mall, and takes runners first around the mall and then southward along Paseo de Valencia and the Alicia Parkway. The next several miles follow the parkway, taking runners all the way south to Awma Road and Aliso Creek, where the course enters the park and then begins the long trek back northward toward the finish line at the Laguna Hills Community Center.

Along the way, runners get a chance to run through local parks like Wood Canyon, Hillview and Foxborough Park, as well as Aliso Viejo Community Park. Runners will start their race at 7:00 AM to beat the sun and the (possible) heat, and will have a three-and-a-half-hour time limit to complete the course -- which means they'll need to keep a pace of at most 16 minutes per mile.

Race Weather & Climate

Located near the now famous Laguna Beach area southeast of Los Angeles, the city of Laguna Hills tends to experience mild to moderately warm conditions in the late spring and early summer, with little to no wet weather. In May, average monthly temperatures range between 73°F and 55°F, while rainfall amounts average just over a quarter of an inch for the month.

Fees

$50 for the half marathon if registered before February 28, 2009
