California > Salad Bowl Festival Half Marathon & 5K
Guadalupe, CA  •  Saturday, October 22, 2011  •  Course Map

Half marathon cancelled for 2011, see website below for more details.

Part of a late summer Saturday filled with events for kids and families -- including live music, arts and crafts exhibits, tastings for food, beer and wine and a salad dressing contest -- Guadalupe's Salad Bowl Festival hosts its annual half marathon and 5K run along a route that combines stretches through the city with sections along the dunes and beaches near the Pacific Ocean, several of which served as filming locations for scenes in the 1956 film classic "The Ten Commandments," starring Charlton Heston.

As is likely given away by the event's name, the festival is an effort to promote and raise awareness of the products grown and raised here in Guadalupe and throughout the region known as California's Central Coast, all of the vegetables and fruit that go into salad bowls across the country every day.

The half marathon and 5K running events help kick the festival off, as they're the first events of the day, starting at 9:00 AM. From the starting line at Guadalupe's Central Park -- which also serves as the location for the festival's booths, exhibits and music entertainment -- runners head out through the streets of the city and then onto the nearby Santa Maria River Levee, which they follow for a long out-and-back stretch that overlooks the Santa Maria Valley below.

Runners this year will also head up along the dunes, which they'll climb up to get a gorgeously scenic view of both the Pacific Ocean and the estuaries below just off the beaches, before heading back into the city and to Leroy Park for the race finish. The city lies just a short drive from two of central California's true natural treasures, Guadalupe Dunes Park and Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreational Area (formerly known as Pismo Dunes SVRA), where drivers can bring off-road dune buggy-style vehicles to the park's five and a half miles of dunes and beaches.

While both runners and walkers are welcome and encouraged to participate in the 5K, the half marathon is designed for runners only. Participants may also register on the day of the race, starting at 7:45 AM at Central Park, which lies along 9th Street between Olivera and Pacheco Streets.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled along Southern California's Pacific coastline, just a short drive from nearby San Luis Obispo and just over 160 miles northwest of Los Angeles, the city of Guadalupe typically experiences mild to moderately warm weather conditions throughout most of the year, with little seasonal variation. In October, the city's average monthly temperatures range between 73°F and 49°F -- on the day of the race (Oct. 22), the average high is 73°F and the average low is 48°F -- while rainfall totals average just over half an inch for the month.
