Event Details

According to runners who've taken part in this race in the past, the San Dieguito Half Marathon & 5K is one of those special races that actually lives up to its billing as "one of the most beautiful and scenic courses you will ever run." With an out-and-back course that runs through the heart of Rancho Santa Fe, this race takes runners through a scenic small town nestled along the southern coastline of California, known for its beautiful homes and landscapes that would be right at home on the cover of a magazine as well as its signature feature for runners in this race -- hills.

Starting on the outskirts of San Dieguito County Park and continuing through the city of Rancho Santa Fe, this race has hills and plenty of them -- part of what makes the race "memorable" for many runners, no doubt! From the starting line at the park, the course follows a somewhat zigzag route through the city, taking runners on turns up streets like El Camino Real, La Drilla, Rambla De Las Flores, Via de Fortuna and El Montevideo roads.

After making a U-shaped loop detour along San Elijo, Via de la Cumbre and Lago Lindo streets, the race course takes runners all the way up to Camino del Norte for the turnaround point, and then heads all the way back along the course the field has just run toward the finish line back at San Dieguito County Park. Along the course, there are plenty of both uphill and downhill stretches, starting with the first mile, which allows runners to relax a bit along its roughly mile-long downhill stretch.

The rest of the course features a series of steeply ascending and descending hills, as well as a number of even stretches mixed in, punctuated by scenery both natural and man-made -- beautiful landscapes, hills, trees and wildlife coupled with extravagant homes and exquisitely manicured gardens. Runners also file past the beautifully pristine waters of the San Dieguito Reservoir as they near the turnaround point, as well as past the Rancho Santa Fe Golf Course on their way out and back during the race.

One of the oldest half-marathon running events anywhere in the United States, the course for the San Dieguito Half is certified by USA Track & Field, and the race is sponsored by the San Diego Hash House Harriers as a benefit for the San Diego County Parks Society. The race is open to runners for the half marathon and both runners and walkers for the 5K, and the race day starting time is 8:00 AM.
