Discover "one of the most beautiful and scenic courses you'll ever run" at the San Dieguito Half Marathon in rural Rancho Santa Fe, Ca just 20 minutes northeast of downtown San Diego. Now in its 45th year, the San Dieguito Half is one of the oldest half marathons in the country yet remains a hidden gem of a race.
With an out-and-back course that runs through the heart of Rancho Santa Fe, this race takes runners through a scenic small town nestled along the southern coastline of California, known for its beautiful homes and landscapes that would be right at home on the cover of a magazine.
The USA Track & Field certified course begins in San Dieguito county park and is punctuated by scenery both natural and man-made -- beautiful landscapes, hills, trees and wildlife coupled with extravagant homes and exquisitely manicured gardens. Runners also file past the beautifully pristine waters of the San Dieguito Reservoir as they near the turnaround point, as well as past the Rancho Santa Fe Golf Course on their way out and back during the race.
The course is entirely run on paved roads with rolling hills throughout. Unlike many of the more urban half marathons throughout southern California the tree lined streets and consistently beautiful scenery provide a different type of experience than a typical urban half. Also, the high quality beer garden at the end of the race helps cap off the perfect half marathon experience.
The race sponsored by the San Diego Hash House Harriers as a benefit for the San Diego County Parks Society is great preparation for upcoming spring marathons, especially more hilly races like Big Sur and Boston and is a great winter getaway race in the near perfect San Diego climate. For those not ready for the challenge of a half marathon but still looking for a scenic run there is an out and back 5K as well which follows the first segment of the half marathon course.
