Details
With just under 500 runners crossing the finish line in all three races
combined at last year's running of the race -- and just under 100 in
the 13.1-mile event -- the Sankara iWalk Half Marathon, 10K &
5K is one of Northern California's smaller half marathon road race
events, but also is becoming more popular after just three years on the
state's race calendar. Open to both runners and walkers, the race is
sponsored by the Sankara
Eye Foundation, which raises money for eye care and specialized
procedures such as corneal transplants for patients in India.
The half marathon portion of the event starts at 7:30 AM (with an 8:30
AM starting time for the 10K and 5K) at Mountain View's Shoreline Park,
a scenic 700-acre park with the look of a country club, complete with a
saltwater lake, golf course, rolling grassy hills, and 10 miles of bay
trails, located just to the north of the city. The course for the race
takes participants along the park's 10 miles of waterfront trails, some
paved and some dirt trails, past the 50-acre lake and past its golf
courses, and along the tidal marshes and saltwater ponds.
Also along the race course, runners will get the opportunity to run
along parts of the Baylands Trail, a 5.7-mile trail along the dirt
levee that runs around the length of the Baylands Preserve. This
1,940-acre wildlife and nature preserve is the biggest remaining area
of untouched marshlands in the San Francisco Bay area, and makes for a
beautifully scenic run around the water's edge of the bay.
Runners in the half marathon will start their race at 7:30 AM, followed
by those running the 10K and the 5K races, who will start their races
at 8:30 AM. If you haven't registered online prior to the race,
organizers will also provide onsite registration starting at 6:30 AM
and closing at 8:45 AM. Proceeds from the race will benefit the Sankara
Eye Foundation, which provides funding to treat blindness and provide
medical care for the blind in India, where two-thirds of the world's
blind population live.
