Event Details

Nearly 2,300 runners crossed the finish line in all three races combined at the 2007 running of the Santa Clarita Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K, which follows an out-and-back loop course along the streets of this Southern California city that lies just a short drive from L.A. Following a fast and often flat course -- with a few hilly stretches thrown in -- the race features a combination of paved city streets, natural surface bike trails and paseos, and winds its way through the neighborhoods and along the banks of the Santa Clara River that cuts through the city.

From the starting line on the McBean Parkway just a couple of blocks over from the Valencia Town Center mall (where the finish line lies), runners in all three events start their races at 7:00 AM, running the first couple of miles along Valencia Boulevard and Tourney Road around the Valencia Country Club. After traveling briefly along Magic Mountain Parkway, runners then head into the residential neighborhoods along Avenue Stanford and Avenue Scott, and then along the biking trail along the river, running along the San Francisquito Trail for just over two miles as they near the end of the race and head toward the finish line.

If along the route the landscape seems familiar, it's because the city and its surrounding areas have served as the backdrop for a number of movies and television shows over the years, for everything from The Dukes of Hazzard, B.J. and the Bear and Charlie's Angels back in the 1970s to more recent shows like 24, NCIS and The Riches.

Race organizers note that runners in both the half and the full marathons will need to keep a pace of at most 15 minutes per mile, in order to complete the race within the (full marathon) time limit of 6 1/2 hours. After that time, organizers will begin to remove the traffic cones along the course, and runners will need to keep to the sidewalks if they finish slower than 6 1/2 hours.
