Event
Details
One of a series of trail races that take place throughout the year that
include running events at distances as short as 10Ks to as long as
100-mile ultramarathons, the Santa Cruz Mountains Trail Run takes
runners through the lush redwood forests of Harvey West Park and Henry
Cowell Redwoods State Park, which lie just a few miles outside town
near the University of Santa Cruz. Challenging as well as spectacularly
beautiful, the race features a run through trails with 1,500-year-old
redwood trees as well as gorgeous views overlooking the water of
Monterey Bay.
All four of the trail races in this event -- including the 10K, 29K,
50K and the 21K, which is the half-marathon distance race -- start and
finish at the picnic area at Harvey West Park, which lies just to the
south of Henry Cowell Redwoods Park. From there, runners follow a
number of trails that wind through canyons, wide open meadows and
through oak and pinewood forests on the way out to the turnaround point
near North Big Trees Park Road, taking trails along the way including
Lookout Trail, Spring Trail, Harvey West Trail and the Rincon Connector
Trail.
Prospective participants need to be ready for a high-elevation race
with plenty of steep climbs, as the 21K race will challenge runners
with an overall climb of about 2,490 feet, according to the race
organizers Pacific Coast Trail Runs. Aid stations will be provided at
approximately every 7 to 11 kilometers -- stocked with water, fresh
fruit, boiled potatoes and salt, and Clif shots and nutrient bars --
but runners are encouraged to carry water bottles with them between
stations.
Just over 370 runners crossed the finish line in all four races in
2007, with about 115 runners in the 21K alone. The 50K and 29K races
are scheduled to start runners off at 8:30 AM, while the 21K and 10K
will start at 8:40 AM and 8:50 AM, respectively.
