California > Temecula Half Marathon & 5K
Temecula, CA  •  Sunday, November 4, 2012  •  Course Map

Runners get a chance to test their mettle with a combination of hilly terrain and what is likely to be fairly warm weather at the Temecula Half Marathon & 5K, which makes its second annual running along the dirt roads that wind through the wineries and vineyards of this growing city that lies about an hour's drive north from San Diego.

The out-and-back course for the half marathon race starts at 7:30 AM on the grounds of Mount Palomar Winery, located just off Rancho California Road in the hills that lie just to the east of Temecula. From there, the course takes runners mostly along the dirt roads that wind through the vineyards between Mount Palomar, Baily Creek Winery and Wilson Creek Winery, and then back again through the same fields on the return route back to the race finish line.

Race organizers note that because temperatures here can rise into the 80s and perhaps even the 90s here this time of year, runners should be prepared for hot weather, even if it's chilly around the time the race starts. The course also is filled with rolling hills throughout, and makes an overall uphill ascent from the start to the mid-way turnaround point on Buck Road near Wilson Creek Winery, followed by an equally gradual overall descent on the way back to Mount Palomar for the finish.

Those thinking of signing up for the race are encouraged to do so early, as space will be limited. Just over 440 runners crossed the finish line in both races combined at the event's inaugural running in 2011, including nearly 300 runners in the half marathon and just shy of 150 runners in the 5K. Runners in the half marathon will have 3 1/2 hours to complete the course.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in Southern California, about 58 miles north of San Diego and roughly 80 miles southeast of Los Angeles, Temecula typically sees November temperatures that average between 76°F and 40°F, while rainfall is scarce throughout most of the year, averaging just over half an inch for the month. On the day of the race (Nov. 4), the average high is 80°F and the average low is 43°F.
