Event Details

With a course that takes runners over three of this Northern California city's signature bridges -- including Ribbon Bridge, Diestelhorst Bridge and the Sundial Bridge -- the aptly named Three Bridges Half Marathon is part of the local Redding Lions Club's annual Turtle Bay Run road race event, which also includes a 10K race and a 2-mile run/walk for everyone from adults to children as young as age five. Mostly fast and flat, the race takes runners closely along the shoreline of the Sacramento River, which runs through the center of the city.

All three races start at the Turtle Bay Visitors Center, which lies at the bend in the river in downtown Redding, adjacent to the Turtle Bay Exploration Park, an ecological park that also includes the nearby McConnell Arboretum which runners trek through after running across the Sundial Bridge, which is also part of the park. The out-and-back loop course for the half marathon starts at the visitors center and takes runners first around the visitors center, and then across the bridge and around the arboretum before turning onto the trail that runs along the river.

The race then follows the winding trail along the river and through Lake Redding Park, where it turns to the left (south) on Benton Drive/North Court Street for the bridge crossing over the Diestelhorst Bridge, over the southern bank of the river. Here, the race route joins up with Middle Creek Road for a long straightaway, curving along with the path of the river and joining up with the trail that leads the field up to the Ribbon Bridge, the third and final bridge crossing of the race. After they cross the Ribbon Bridge, runners then follow the trail along the river all the way back to the starting line, where they cross the Sundial Bridge again on the way to the finish line.
