Event Details

As the seasons are changing from late summer into early autumn in this corner of California, the transition will bring the inaugural running of Granite Bay's "Tough As Granite" Half Marathon, 10K and 5K trail races, which take runners along the winding and twisting trails that run along and near the shoreline of Lake Folsom State Recreational Area, which lies about a half-hour's drive from nearby Sacramento in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Like its name suggests, the race is tough and challenging, particularly the half-marathon event, which will by turns be sandy, rocky, muddy and studded with tree roots, depending on where runners find themselves along the course.

The starting line for all three races will be at the Folsom Lake State Recreation Area parking area, which is accessible from Park Road, off Douglas Boulevard driving east from Granite Bay. Once runners leave the start -- each of the three races has its own starting time, beginning with the half marathon at 8:30 AM, followed by the 10K at 9:00 AM and the 5K at 9:15 AM -- they will run northward along the lakeshore and then eastward into the hilly, tree-covered trail areas, following trails that wind left and right and include numerous switchbacks along the route.

Those running the half marathon will run the 10K trail loop twice, which is both scenic and difficult early on in the race -- the steepest climbs occur just after the first mile marker, when runners jump from roughly 450 feet above sea level to over 575 feet above sea level fairly quickly. The course never really evens out, as hills become less severe but remain pretty much constant throughout the race.

Race Weather & Climate

Perched on the edge of the Folsom Lake State Recreation Area and about 23 miles northwest of Sacramento in Northern California, Granite Bay (like much of the inland area) tends to see hot, dry weather conditions throughout the middle and late summer. In September, average monthly temperatures range between 89°F and 58°F, while rainfall totals average less than half an inch (0.45 inches) for the month.
