Just over 3,000 runners from all 50 states and 13 countries around the
world gathered for the 2006 US Half Marathon in San Francisco, which
began at the historic Muni Pier on the city's waterfront, within
shouting distance of the Golden Gate Bridge. The race's 13.1-mile
out-and-back course begins and ends at Aquatic Park, and is mainly flat
but includes
three challenging climbs near the Golden Gate Bridge. The roads used
for the race are closed for four hours, and reopen afterwards to
vehicular traffic on a 13 minute-per-mile pace, at which point slower
runners and walkers may need to proceed along the side of the course.
