Event Details

Nearly 300 runners came out and braved the rugged mountain terrain at the summer 2008 running of the Valley Crest Half Marathon, a hilly, challenging trail race that takes runners along a course made up entirely of dirt roads through Mulholland Gateway Park just outside Tarzana and Reseda, California. Below the road along the course, runners are treated to the beautiful views of the surrounding San Fernando Valley, with plenty of springtime foliage in bloom.

Recognized by both the Road Runners Club of America and Trail Runner magazine as one of its trophy series races, the Valley Crest half keeps its field relatively small in order to preserve its intimate, friendly feel along the trail. The race begins at Marvin Braude Park on the dirt section of Mulholland Drive, and takes runners along an out-and-back course with two legs -- the first, which takes the field on a westward route out to the first turnaround point at the trail's west end, and the second, which takes participants all the way out to the peak of San Vincente Mountain.

Though aid stations are distributed at roughly three-mile intervals along the race route, runners are encouraged to bring their own water bottles to make sure they stay properly hydrated during the race. Organizers limit the race time to three hours; if you haven't passed the aid station at the mile 7 marker by 9:30 AM, they add, you will be asked to drop out of the race. Those thinking of running in the race need to be ready for some serious changes in elevation -- the half-marathon experiences an overall climb and descent of roughly 1,700 feet over the course of the race.

Race Weather & Climate

Run just before the official start of summer, the race has typically experienced cool, overcast weather in past years. In June, Reseda temperatures average between 53°F and 89°F.
