California > Wine Country Runs Half Marathon & 5K
Paso Robles, CA  •  Sunday, March 25, 2012  •  Course Map

Known for its rolling farmlands, its hot springs, and perhaps most famously for its wineries and vineyards, Paso Robles plays host every spring to the annual running of the Wine Country Runs Half Marathon & 5K, an out-and-back loop race that takes runners on a hilly and occasionally challenging route through wide-open fields and the hills just north of town.

More than 1,100 runners and walkers crossed the finish line at the race's spring 2011 running, with more than 750 of those finishers completing the half marathon alone. From the starting line at River Oaks Hot Springs on Clubhouse Drive, runners follow what is roughly a counter-clockwise loop, turning right out of the springs area onto Buena Vista Drive, which they follow as it winds its way northward for the next three and a half miles.

The course turns next onto Airport Road and heads north, and stays mostly on flat terrain for approximately the next three miles, as it turns onto Wellsona Road. As runners pass mile marker 6, they hit the first big downhill stretch of the race, and continue downhill until they turn onto River Road, which flattens out for a quick up-and-back stretch.

Runners hit the turnaround point roughly a mile up River Road, and then head southward again back onto Wellsona and then again onto River Road, which runs parallel to the scenic Salinas River. The next three miles or so feature some rolling hills and then a final uphill stretch as runners make their way into the finish, back at River Oaks Hot Springs.
