Event Details

Organized by the California-based running, triathlon and mountain biking events organizer Events With Sole and sponsored by the Lungevity Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to fighting lung cancer, the new Wine Country Marathon and Half Marathon will celebrate its first annual running in the fall of 2008, with a course that takes runners along country roads through Sonoma County's mountain valleys, and features a downhill finish for the last few miles that will give plenty of runners a chance to notch personal record race times.

The half-marathon course begins at the half-way point of the full marathon course, starting just outside the town of Geyserville along the Redwood Highway (Hwy. 128). From there, the course starts going briefly northward and then turns around at the first mile marker, where it begins the long trek southward along Highway 101 toward the finish line in Healdsburg. Along the way, runners will pass along beautifully scenic tree-lined country roads through California's historic wine making region, past century-old homes as well as many vineyard estates.

Run along terrain that's made up of all paved surfaces throughout the race, the course features a mix of flat stretches and gently rolling hills through the wine country for the first several miles -- including views of the area's Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley -- and then the last few miles take runners along a downhill stretch into downtown Healdsburg, all the way to the finish line at the corner of Vine Street and North Street.

Runners who participate in the half marathon will have five hours to finish their race (full marathoners will have a time limit of six hours, meaning they'll need to keep a pace of at most 14 minutes per mile), after which time there will be no on-course supervision. Those running the half are asked to be at the shuttle pickup point in Healdsburg by 7:00 AM, so they can be taken to the starting line in time for the 8:00 AM start.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled in the valley among the Sonoma County mountains, about an hour's drive from San Francisco to the south, the town of Healdsburg enjoys the kind of weather that Northern California wine country is known for -- hot, dry summers with virtually no rain and milder and much wetter fall and winter seasons. In October, local average monthly temperatures range between 76°F and 49°F, while rainfall amounts average about 2.12 inches for the month.
