California > Zombie Runner San Francisco Run Half Marathon & 10K
San Francisco, CA • Saturday, June 1, 2013 • Course Map
Now set for its third annual running, among a series of more than 20 trail races that take place up and down the California and Oregon coasts each year and are hosted by the Walnut Creek, Calif.-based Zoom Running Events, the Zombie Runner San Francisco Run Half Marathon & 10K makes its run along a route that unfolds through the Presidio and the parks along the San Francisco coastline.
The half marathon starts at 8:00 AM (the 10K starts at 8:15 AM) at Crissy Field along San Francisco's East Beach, in the shadow of the nearby Golden Gate Bridge. From there, runners will first head west along the shoreline, making their way through parks and recreation areas well-known to Bay Area residents, including Fort Point and the Presidio, and then Baker Beach, Land's End and Sutro Heights Park along the area known as South Bay.
Once runners make their way around the shoreline and under the Golden Gate Bridge, they'll head onto the coastal trail that snakes its way southward along Baker Beach, a mile-long stretch of rugged rocky coastline from which runners will be able to see the spectacular views of both the bridge as well as the Marin Headlands off in the distance across the bay. The coastal trail leads runners all the way south down the beach to the neighborhoods of 25th Avenue, where runners head off the sand and onto the paved surface for the next stretch of the course.
Next, the course follows a few turns as runners make their way along 25th, Sea Cliff Avenue and El Camino Del Mar, past China Beach Park and into the section of the coastline known as Land's End. Shaded by the signature Northern California cypress trees and filled with trails that lead from the roads to the nearby beaches, Land's End offers perhaps the rockiest stretch of the San Francisco coastline, and runners will run along the Land's End coastal trail through the woods to the race turnaround point at Sutro Heights Park.
From the turnaround, runners then head back along the route they've just run, in the reverse direction all the way back to the starting line at Crissy Field along East Beach. That doesn't mean they're done just yet, however -- to finish all 13.1 miles of the half marathon, there's a final loop around the area known as Marina Green before bringing runners back to the starting area for the race finish.
