activeregisterEmbracing their motto – “no politics, just patriotism” – the organizers of Longmont’s American Heroes Run invite runners of all abilities and distance levels out to take part in an event that both celebrates the freedoms we enjoy and also serves as a remembrance of those who lost their lives in the attacks on New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. on September 11, 2001.

Runners can choose among four race distances at the event, including a full marathon, half marathon, 5K run/walk and a 9.11-mile run, in which runners will make their way around the loop course for 9 hours and 11 minutes, as tribute to the 9/11 victims and their families. The race also features a 24-hour run and a 100-mile run that begin on Friday evening.

All the races take place in Longmont’s Rogers Grove Park, a 14-acre public park that lies along the St. Vrain Greenway, a system of paved biking, walking and running trails that stretches from Golden Ponds Park & Nature Area (just to the northwest of Rogers Grove) all the way to Sandstone Ranch Community Park, which lies just to the east of Longmont’s downtown.

The course for the race is a one-mile-long soft dirt trail that makes a loop through Rogers Grove — those running the half marathon will run around it 13.1 times, while those running the marathon will make 26 loops around the park.

Organizers welcome runners to come out and take part in the race no matter what their appetite is for running a number of loops around this park; entrants are free to come out and walk a single loop around it, they add, or run as long as they wish.

The starting times for the race are scheduled to mark the times the attacks occurred in New York and Washington, D.C. Runners will start the races at 8:46 AM, when the first attack took place on the World Trade Center, when American Airlines Flight 11 hit the trade center’s north tower.

There will be a singing of “God Bless America” at 9:03 AM, when the second plane (United Airlines Flight 175) hit the south tower. Runners will also hear the singing of “America the Beautiful” at 9:37 AM, the time when American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon.
