Details
Open to both runners and walkers, the annual Glenwood Canyon Shuffle
Race for Literacy takes participants along the bike paths that wind
through the beautifully mountainous and scenic Glenwood Canyon area
just east of the town of Glenwood Springs, Colo. Carved over time by
the Colorado River, the canyon stretches about 16 miles through the
Rocky Mountains, and runners can expect to see sheer cliffs on both
sides of the course as well as smaller canyons and creeks that branch
off from the main path along the run.
Participants begin the race by parking at the No Name Rest Area off
Interstate 70 just east of Glenwood Springs, where they board the buses
that will transport them to the starting line further up in Glenwood
Canyon. From the starting line, the course winds through the
rocky-faced canyon walls along the bike path, as the canyon walls reach
over 1,000 feet above the trail in some spots. Though the course has
often seen windy conditions in past years, that doesn't take away from
the beauty of the route, which has been called one of the most scenic
sections of the U.S. Interstate Highway system anywhere in the country.
Those interested in either running or walking the race need to be aware
that is a high-elevation run, as the canyon elevation ranges from about
6,200 feet above sea level at its start near the Colorado town of
Dotsero to its lowest point, about 5,800 feet above sea level near
Glenwood Springs. The race starting time is 9:00 AM, and the event is
run as a benefit for the local Literacy Outreach nonprofit
organization, which provides adult literacy and training services in
Colorado's Garfield County, where Glenwood Springs lies.
