Event Details

A tradition in this ski and summer outdoor resort town for three decades, the Mountain Madness Half Marathon & 10K is part of the Steamboat Springs Running Series of events, which offer runners the chance to come out and participate in long-distance runs ranging from 5K and 10K races to half- and full-marathons, in both road races and trail running events. Along with the springtime Hayden Cog Run, the Mountain Madness Half Marathon is one of the oldest events in the series, and takes runners along an out-and-back course from the town's Howelson Hill Park downtown along River Road, with plentiful rolling hills and all paved surfaces throughout the race.

Nearly 100 runners turned out for the event's summer 2008 running, with 45 of those runners competing in the half marathon and roughly the same number in the 10K, which takes place entirely on an out-and-back course along River Road. For those running the 13.1-mile half marathon, the course offers ample views of the Yampa River that cuts through the town as well as the mountains that rise over the city in the distance, which are a popular destination both for skiing in the winter and hiking, trail running, mountain biking and kayaking in the summer.

Even experienced runners can have a difficult time if they don't arrive in Steamboat Springs in time to acclimate to the area's high elevation, which sits at nearly 7,000 feet above sea level in Colorado's Rocky Mountains. The town itself is as much an attraction as the mountains areas surrounding it, as its streets and architecture are designed to give the feel of the old West, and are filled with plenty of restaurants, bars and shops to take in after you're done with the race.

Race Weather & Climate

Located in Colorado's northwestern region, just over a three-hour drive from Denver, the town of Steamboat Springs is nestled up high in the Rocky Mountains and typically experiences mild to moderately warm weather in the summer, with July temperatures that average between 45°F and 76°F. July is the area's wettest month, but with just over 2 inches of average rainfall, the area stays relatively dry this time of year.
