Event Details

The weather conditions can be as challenging as the terrain and the elevation change at the early springtime running of Salida's annual Run Through Time Marathon, Half Marathon & 2-Mile Run, which takes runners along the historic and spectacularly scenic Ute Trail that winds up the mountains just to the northeast of this southern central Colorado town, whose friendly, unpretentious atmosphere and abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation have garnered it raves from publications ranging from Outside Magazine to the New York Times.

With its very steep and challenging route, which in some years is dry with sunny weather and in others is covered in snow that can be two to three feet deep, the out-and-back race starts and finishes at Riverside Park in downtown Salida, which lies along the banks of the Arkansas River that flows through the town. From there, runners follow largely a single road to the turnaround point and back, along County Road 175, which is also known as the Ute Trail.

While the surface for the road up to the turnaround point (which lies at the 6.5-mile point for those running the half marathon and the 13.1-mile point for those running the full marathon) is a dirt county road, it is maintained and has a smooth and flat surface. That last adjective, however, doesn't describe what runners will experience during the race, as the elevation rise and fall for the half marathon is about 2,000 feet for the half marathon (a 2,000-ft. ascent on the way up and a 2,000-ft. descent on the way down), and about 3,800 feet for those taking part in the full, 26.2-mile marathon.

Whether the course conditions are dry, as they were at the race's 2007 running, or covered in snow as the route was in 2008, runners can enjoy the heated log cabin waiting for them at the finish line. Just over 150 runners crossed the finish line in the full and the half marathons combined at the race's 2009 running, with about 70 of those finishing the half marathon alone.

Race Weather & Climate

Runners need to be prepared for cold temperatures and possibly heavy snow in the early spring in Salida, which lies nearly 150 miles by car southwest of the Denver metro area. In March, the area typically sees average temperatures that range between 51°F and 21°F, while precipitation amounts average just over half an inch for the month.

Fees
