Details
Featuring two and a half miles of running along the sands of
Jacksonville's beaches and an opportunity to support one of the running
world's most significant charitable fundraising efforts, the 26.2 With
Donna National Marathon to Fight Breast Cancer marks just its second
annual running in the winter of 2009, after an inaugural running in
2008 that drew more than 7,000 runners out for both races combined and
raised more than $800,000, which is used both to help those fighting
breast cancer today and to support research to find new ways to fight
the
disease.
Both the half and the full marathons in this event start at
Jacksonville's Mayo Clinic Campus just off San Pablo Road, and take
runners for the early part of the race eastward from the clinic toward
the beach communities of Neptune Beach, Jacksonville Beach and Atlantic
Beach. Runners head eastward from the clinic along J. Turner Butler
Boulevard until they reach the South Beach Regional Shopping Center,
where they make the turn around the cloverleaf and head north along
Highway 1A, which is also 3rd Street.
Once they're on 3rd, runners start heading north into the oceanfront
neighborhoods of Jacksonville Beach, turning on 36th Avenue and then
again on Ocean Boulevard as they continue making their way north along
the race course. The route takes a few more turns as it heads through
Huguenot Park, whose lake, tennis courts and bird-watching observation
towers offer recreational opportunities for local residents. After
running past the park, participants then head out onto what is perhaps
the race's most unique feature, the roughly mile-long stretch along the
hard-packed sands of Jacksonville Beach (for those running the full
marathon, this stretch lasts for about two and a half miles).
After the mile along the beach, where runners will see waves crashing
against the shore as they near the half-way point in the race, those
running the half-marathon turn off at 4th Avenue South while those
running the full continue along the beach up to 20th Avenue North. The
half-marathoners then head south along 1st Street, following it for the
next two and a half miles as they make their way back toward the turn
at 35th Street South, where they head back over to 3rd Street and then
onto J. Turner Butler Boulevard for the finishing stretch back toward
the finish line at the Mayo Clinic.
Proceeds from the race will benefit the Donna Foundation, begun by
two-time breast cancer survivor Donna Deegan, a well-known Jacksonville
local television anchor who has completed several marathons after being
diagnosed with breast cancer and serves as an inspiration to women
fighting the disease around the country. While the full marathon is
open to runners only, the half marathon will be open to both runners
and walkers, provided they can complete the race within the seven-hour
time limit.
