Event Details

More than 600 runners came out to run and cross the finish line in both races combined at the winter 2009 running of the Pensacola Marathon & Half Marathon, which takes runners on a tour of the waterfront areas and city streets of this city on Florida's Gulf coast panhandle. Both the half and the full marathons share the same course for much of the race, starting in downtown Pensacola and running a point-to-point loop through town.

From the starting line near downtown Pensacola's waterfront on Bayfront Boulevard, runners leave the starting line at 6:30 AM and head northeast along Bayfront, catching views over their shoulders of gorgeous Pensacola Bay and the bridge over to Gulf Breeze and the Gulf Island National Seashore in the distance. Runners then continue along Bayfront until it becomes Scenic Highway, with the waterfront to runners' right the entire stretch as they run through the local neighborhood known as East Pensacola Heights.

Runners follow the Scenic Highway (Highway 90) north all the way until the intersection with Summit Boulevard, where they split off from those running the full 26.2-mile marathon and turn left and head toward the Pensacola Regional Airport, which they pass as they head toward 12th Avenue. This stretch of the course next takes runners south on 12th, east on Texar and then south again on Palafox Street, which takes runners all the way to the finish line near the waterfront.

The course for the race is largely fast and flat, and is certified by USA Track and Field as a qualifying route for the Boston Marathon, one of the latest on the calendar available in the Southeast before the Boston each spring. The course has a time limit of six hours, which means runners in both races must keep a pace of at least 14 minutes per mile or better.

Race Weather & Climate

The Pensacola area features mostly cool-to-mild temperatures in early winter, with November temps averaging between 70°F and 51°F. Be prepared for rain, however -- Pensacola sees an average of nearly 4 1/2 inches of precipitation during the month the race will be held.
