Event Details

Just over 620 runners came out to run and cross the finish line at the Florida State University track and field complex at the 2009 running of the Tallahassee Marathon & Half Marathon, which takes runners on an out-and-back course that starts at the university and winds its way along a fast and flat route through the city streets and neighborhoods in and around FSU and Florida A&M University. Run entirely on paved surfaces for the entire route, the race is an excellent one for beginners as it experiences very little change in elevation, rising from a low of 50 feet above sea level to a high of 98 feet above sea level over the entire race route.

From the starting line at Florida State University's Mike Long Track Facility, runners start their race at 7:30 AM and head on a course around the track and field complex and pass Doak Campbell Stadium, the home of Bobby Bowden's FSU Seminoles. Runners then exit the campus on Hendry Street and continue heading south, making turns onto Eppes Drive, Lake Bradford Road and Gamble Street before turning onto the bike path that runs parallel to Mills Street.

Runners then stay on the bike path for the next several miles of the race, running through the Four Points area and alongside Woodville Highway, all the way to the turnaround point just above Capitol Circle. Once they reach the turnaround, runners then begin heading back in reverse along the course they've just run, all the way back to the finish line at the track and field facility at Florida State. The bike path forms the bulk of the race, as runners stay on the path for miles 3 through 11.

Organized by the local running group the Gulf Winds Track Club, the 2010 running of the race will mark the event's 36th anniversary -- the 26.2-mile marathon was run for the first time in 1975, while the 13.1-mile half-marathon was added later, in the mid-1980s -- and the event is open to wheelchair competitors as well as runners.
