Event Details

Take a romp through the rolling hills, tree-lined meadows and around the lakes of central Florida's Alafia River State Park, which lies just a few miles from nearby Tampa and is home to the X-Country Marathon, Half Marathon, 30K & 5K, one of two races that takes place in the park each year. Organizers say that runners will feel like they're running the bluegrass hills of Kentucky thanks to the landscape inside the park, whose more than 6,000 acres offer some of the state's most plentiful recreational areas for hiking, running, mountain biking and more.

The event's marathon and half marathon races share the same course -- those running the 13.1-mile half marathon run the loop course through the park a single time, while those running the full take a second loop around the course to finish their 26.2 miles. From the starting line just north of the main park entrance, the race follows a winding path through the park, twisting and turning along the treeline and past a number of lakes and ponds, and through grassy meadows and fields.

The terrain for the race is all natural surfaces, as runners trek across a combination of grass and dirt paths along the hiking & biking trails through the park. After winding along the circuitous path through the park, runners finish up the half just a stone's throw from the starting line. Those running in both the half and the full will have six and a half hours to complete the race; after that time, the course will no longer be monitored, so organizers caution runners to attempt the 26.2-mile full marathon only if they feel confident they're fit and trained well enough to complete the course within the allotted time.

Race Weather & Climate

Set along the center of the state, near Florida's coastline along the Gulf of Mexico, the city of Tampa typically experiences mild to moderately warm weather in the mid-fall season, with much drier conditions on average compared to the rest of the year. In November, average monthly temperatures range between 78°F and 61°F, while rainfall totals average about 1.62 inches for the month.
