Event Details

The quiet, tree-lined roadways of this small town just north of Atlanta will be the setting for the inaugural running in the fall of 2009 of the Kennesaw Locomotive Half Marathon & 5K, which will take runners and walkers on an out-and-back course that starts and finishes at the Cobb Place and Town Center Commons shopping centers and lies just a few miles from the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, the site of the 1864 Civil War battle of the same name.

Limited to 1,000 entrants for its first-ever running, the race will start on the southern end of Cobb Place and loop around the shopping center for its first mile or so, and then take runners northward along Barrett Lakes Boulevard, which runs parallel to Interstate 75, all the way up to the turnaround point at Chastain Road, which lies just after the mile 3 marker.

After runners turn around, right at the southern end of the campus of Kennesaw State University, they head back down Barrett Lakes Boulevard toward the shopping center area where they started. Once they make it to Cobb Place Boulevard, runners then turn right and make a loop around Vaughn Road, Roberts Boulevard and Auto Park Drive, and then turn left on Barrett Lakes Boulevard again for one last loop around Cobb Place to the finish line in the shopping center's parking lot.

Open to both runners and walkers, the 13.1-mile course features a combination of rolling hills and flat stretches, with the steepest hills around the mile 3, 6 and 9 markers. The highest point in the race lies at just above 1,050 feet, between mile markers 8 and 9, and the lowest point occurs at about 950 feet, between the 2nd and 3rd mile markers.
