Georgia > Race for the Fallen at Red Top Mountain Half Marathon
Cartersville, GA • Saturday, September 21, 2013 • Course Map
Set for its 3rd annual running as summer is giving way to fall in late September 2013 in the foothills of the Appalachians among the north Georgia mountains, the Race For The Fallen Half Marathon & 5K will take runners through the trails, old mining roads and parkland roads of Red Top Mountain State Park and around stretches of Lake Allatoona, both of which lie just a short drive from nearby Cartersville.
Named the "Race for the Fallen," the event will be run as a benefit to help fund the Police Benevolent Foundation's Fallen Officer Fund, which helps provide a year's salary to the beneficiaries of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. This fund helps the Salary Replacement Benefit offered through the foundation for members of the Southern States Police Benevolent Association, the race organizers add.
The race will take runners through the gorgeous natural landscape of Georgia's Red Top Mountain State Park, which is surrounded on three sides by the 12,000-acre Lake Allatoona, one of north Georgia's most popular places for fishing, boating and outdoor recreation. Named for the rich red color of the soil here, the park itself contains more than 12 miles of trails through its forests and woods, perfect for hiking, mountain biking, walking and trail running.
Runners will follow an out-and-back course for the race that will wind through the park's trails and over a number of foot bridges, and part of the race will follow stretches along the shoreline of the lake. Organizers note that while the weather will likely be warm on the mid-September race day, much of the course will be shaded by tree cover as most of the course takes runners through the woods inside the park.
The race starting and finish line will lie near the entrance to the park's Iron Hill trail, just off Lodge Road inside the park.
