Georgia's Rock & Roll Savannah Marathon & Half Marathon saw more than 23,000 runners and walkers take to the streets of the city immortalized in John Berendt's 1994 classic Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil at its inaugural running in November 2011, with an estimated 16,000 of those finishers completing the half marathon alone.
The course for the race -- which was fairly nondescript early on in 2011, with the first few miles unfolding along more industrial and warehouse districts outside the city -- shows off the scenery that makes the city such a popular tourist destination once it heads into Savannah's historic downtown districts, with moss-covered trees hanging over the streets, which were lined by thousands of spectators out to cheer runners on.
