Event
Details
One of the state of Georgia's smaller, more intimte road race events,
the Run For Relief Half Marathon & 5K welcomed saw just over
110 runners cross the finish line in the 13.1-mile race and the 5K race
combined at the 2008 running of the race, which takes participants on a
course that encircles Albany's Marine Corps Logistics Base, which lies
just a few miles east of the city. The race is organized and run to
raise both awareness of and funds for the Navy-Marine Corps Relief
Society, a nonprofit that provides a range of services, educational
scholarships and counseling for members of the U.S. military and their
families.
Run along and out-and-back loop course along the flat, paved roadways
around the base, the race starts and finishes at the parking lot near
Covella Pond on the base, accessibile from the base's front gate just
off South Shaw Road. From there, runners follow the course along
Radford Boulevard, past the base's Twin Oaks Golf Course, and then out
onto South Shaw Road. The course then turns left just after Spencer
Road and turns left again onto North Shaw Road, which runners follow
all the way to the western edge of the base, where they turn onto West
Shaw Road and then again onto South Shaw, for the last stretch of the
race back inside the base to the finish line.
Update as of Nov. 21, 2008:
We spoke
with the base's webmaster and the organizers have not yet made a
decision on whether or not the race will be run in 2009. We will keep
readers posted here as soon as we receive confirmation on whether or
not the Run For Relief Half Marathon will be run in 2009.
