Details
The downtown streets and oceanfront views of Georgia’s Tybee
Island set the stage for the Tybee Island Marathon, Half Marathon
& 5K, which has been run each winter on this small barrier
island off the coast of Savannah since its first running in 1994. The
loop course for the race, which has been redesigned several times since
the event’s inception (most recently in 2005), starts and
finishes at the Tybee Gymnasium, near Memorial Park on Butler Street.
The 13.1-mile course (full marathon participants run it twice) is run
entirely on asphalt/paved city streets. It takes runners to both ends
of
the 21-square-mile island and passes by sights such as the Fort Screven
Historic District, Jaycee Park and the historic Tybee Island Light
Station, one of handful of 18th-century-era lighthouses still in
operation in the United States.
Participants are cautioned to remember that the roads for this event
remain open to traffic, so runners are encouraged to stay in the right
lane at all times, unless directed otherwise by race organizers or
traffic police. The full and half marathon races start at 8:00 AM, and
are limited to 5 ½ hours.
