Details
Runners get a chance to trek through the trails,
hills and streams of Farmington's Oconee Heritage Park at the United
States Marine Corps Toys For Tots Trail Half Marathon, which marks just
its second annual running in the fall of 2008, just a short drive south
of the city of Athens and the University of Georgia, home of this
year's number-one ranked Georgia Bulldogs college football team.
The course for the race unfolds entirely within the bounds of the park,
whose 364 acres encompass wooded forest areas as well as wide-open
fields, single-track trails and stream crossings, and portions of the
nearby Appalachee River. Located just off Highway 441 south of
Farmington, the park offers what race organizers call a "very technical
trail run" around two loops for the course -- the first is a seven-mile
loop and the second is a 6.1-mile loop. There will be a water and aid
station available at the start and finish for each loop of the race,
but none along
the course.
The time limit for runners to complete the race will be four hours for
both loops combined, or two hours for runners who choose to run only
the first loop. The race will start at 11:00 AM, and will benefit both
the USMC Toys For Tots
Campaign as well as the Athens Area Habitat for Humanity.
