Details
An all-new half marathon running event for the Atlanta area in 2008,
the ZOOMA Atlanta Women's Half Marathon & 5K will take runners
-- both women and men are welcome and encouraged to sign up and
participate, by the way -- from the Atlantic Station shopping and
entertainment district all the way down to Turner Field, the home field
of Major League Baseball's Atlanta Braves, and back. Part of a series
of six races that will be run throughout the country starting in 2008
and 2009, the ZOOMA Atlanta race is part of an effort by the
organization of the same name to celebrate and encourage participation
by women of all ages in athletic events.
Run along an out-and-back loop course through the city, the race starts
near the Dillard's department store in Atlantic Station and follows
through the streets of the neighborhood for the first stretch of the
race before taking runners across Atlanta's 17th Street bridge, on the
way to the turn onto Peachtree Street. Once they reach Peachtree,
runners will follow a brief straightaway for a few blocks until 14th
Street, where they turn left and then right on Piedmont Avenue, which
they follow all the way from Midtown to Downtown.
After running for the next few miles along Piedmont, runners reach
Capitol Avenue and Hank Aaron Drive, running past the Georgia State
Capitol Building (also called the "Gold Dome") and run across the
bridge over the interstate highway toward Turner Field, which they'll
recognize by the huge photo on the front of the stadium of Henry
Aaron's record-breaking 715th home run. The course winds along the
curving street in front of the baseball stadium and then heads north
again along Capitol back over the bridge, and then turns left onto
Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
The couse heads north along Techwood Drive, taking runners just past
Centennial Olympic Park and CNN Center, and then heads north along
Spring Street for a long straightaway that includes a long, slow
declining downhill stretch. Spring Street leads toward 17th Street,
where runners turn left and head back over the bridge toward the finish
back at Atlantic Station.
