Event Details

A field of roughly 1,000 runners makes its way from all corners of the globe each summer for the annual running of the Kona Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K & 5K, which features an out-and-back course that starts and finishes at the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort and takes runners across the running portion of the course used in Hawaii's world-famous Ironman Triathlon. Mostly fast and flat and run on paved surfaces throughout, the race course features largely gentle uphills and downhills, with no hills climbing more than 120 feet above sea level.

From the starting line near Makolea Street near the Keauhou Beach Resort, those running both the half and the full marathons follow the course as it winds northward along Alli Drive along the Big Island coastline, passing Keolonahihi State Historical Park and Holualoa Bay along the way. Runners will see plenty of the sights Hawaii is known for along these portions of the route, including lush Hawaiian rain forests and the waves crashing against the rocky Pacific shoreline.

The half marathon course continues all the way north to the 6.55-mile point in the race on the Queen Kaahumanu Highway, just south of the Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park, whose roughly 1,100 acres are home to stark lava fields, fish ponds and coral reefs out in the water. Once they hit the turnaround point, runners then head back in reverse along the course they've just run, back toward the finish line at the resort.

Race Weather & Climate

Located along the western shore of Hawaii's Big Island, the resort town of Keauhou-Kona typically sees warm to moderate weather conditions throughout the year, and usually much drier weather than the northern and eastern shores of the island. In June, the town's average monthly temperatures range between 85°F and 72°F, while rainfall totals average just under half an inch for the month.

Fees

$55 for the half marathon, if registered by April 30, 2010
