Idaho > Bandit Breakout Half Marathon, 10K & 5K
Kuna, ID • Saturday, April 5, 2014 • Course Map
At first glance, this race may strike the casual reader and runner as one of the stranger running experiences available out there. With a course that takes participants on a run around the grounds of a prison complex out in the high desert country of southwestern Idaho, Kuna's Bandit Breakout Half Marathon -- formerly known as the High Speed Half at the Prison -- must certainly generate curious stares at first.
When you take a further look at the race and the organization that supports it, the purpose of the race shines through -- to honor the sacrifice of police officers who have given their lives in the line of duty throughout Idaho, by donating all proceeds from the race to educational scholarships for their familes and survivors through the Idaho Peace Officers Memorial Fund, whose memorial is found on the grounds of the Idaho State Police Headquarters in Meridian, about 10 miles to the north of Kuna.
The race -- which includes a half marathon as well as a 10K and a 5K race -- follows an out-and-back course that starts and finishes near the main parking lot of the Idaho State Correctional Institution just off Pleasant Valley Road. From there, those running the half marathon follow what is basically a clockwise loop route from the prison out into the desert country to the south and west of the prison grounds, where runners will encounter plenty of wide-open spaces along these rolling rural roads.
Runners follow the route as it proceeds out from the prison to Pleasant Valley Road, where runners turn left and head south all the way down to the intersection with Barker Road. Here they turn right and head west until meeting up with Cole Road, where they turn right again and begin heading north along Cole for roughly the next 3 1/2 miles, until they meet up with Ten Mile Creek Road.
This stretch of the race, the final few miles back in toward the finish, feature its most challenging uphill miles -- while the first half of the race features a gradual descent over the first few miles of the course, the final three miles are mostly uphill.
After runners turn off Ten Mile Creek Road, they make another right onto Pleasant Valley Road before turning left onto the access road back in toward the prison parking lot, where they'll cross the race finish line.
