Idaho > Portneuf Medical Center Pocatello Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K & 5K
Pocatello, ID  •  Saturday, August 31, 2013  •  Course Map

Sponsored by Portneuf Medical Center, the Pocatello Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K & 5K features point-to-point courses for both full and half-marathon participants, also called "Running the Gap" by the race organizers. The course takes runners through this southern Idaho city known as the "Gateway to the Northwest," famous as a stop for pioneers, gold miners and early American settlers traveling the Oregon Trail.

For full marathon participants, the race offers a steep drop in elevation throughout the course, from 6,100 feet above sea level to just above 4,400 feet by the finish. Runners in the half marathon join the race at the midpoint of the full, 26.2-mile marathon on Old Highway 91, and encounter hills between miles 3 and 5 and miles 7 and 9. After the tenth mile, the route begins a slowly sloping downhill toward the finish line in Pocatello at Lower Ross Park.

Along the race course, runners can take their minds off the challenging hills with the views of the southern Idaho mountains off in the distance, as they make their way through the small nearby communities of Inkom and Portneuf on their way toward the finish in Pocatello. The race finishes just a stone's throw south of the campus of Idaho State University, and runners can expect plenty of water and aid stations especially along the race's last several miles as the course levels out toward the finish.

The race's organizers note that those running the half are expected to maintain a pace of no slower than 20 minutes 36 seconds per mile, and the event also includes a 10K and 5K run as well as a 1.5-mile "MaraFun" and a 0.2-mile race for kids age 8 and under.
