Details
Sponsored by the Idaho State Journal newspaper, the Pocatello Marathon
& Half Marathon features point-to-point courses for both full
and half-marathon participants, also called "Running the Gap"
by the race organizers. The course takes runners through this southern
Idaho city known as the "Gateway to the Northwest," famous as a stop
for pioneers, gold miners and early American settlers traveling the
Oregon Trail.
For full marathon participants, the race offers a steep drop in
elevation throughout the course, from 6,100 feet above sea level to
just above 4,400 feet by the finish. Half-marathoners join the race at
the midpoint on Old Highway 91, and encounter hills between miles 3 and
5 and miles 9 and 10. After the tenth mile, the route begins a slowly
sloping downhill toward the finish line in Pocatello at Lower Ross Park.
