Event Details

At Boise's three-year-old Prison Break Half Marathon, 10K & 5K, the name of the race isn't just a clever moniker designed to stir interest in the event -- runners actually do start and finish the race at the city's South Boise Prison Complex, part of the Idaho State Correctional Institution and currently the state's largest prison complex. Between the start and the finish lines, runners fan out along a loop course through the high desert country outside the prison, which features mostly long, gradual hills and inclines.

The start of the race features some fireworks not found at any other race, including ceremonies with the prison's official riot squad and a flyover at the start by a group of Formula One race planes. After the planes buzz by, runners then head out on what is mostly a counter-clockwise loop course, leaving the parking lot in front of the prison and heading out along the prison's perimeter to the water tower, where they turn onto the Dairy road and then onto Pleasant Valley Road.

The next four miles or so of the race feature a long, gradual downhill stretch, as runners make their way around Pleasant Valley Road and then Barker Road, turning right onto South Cole Road just after passing the mile 6 marker. It's here also that the elevation changes from a long, gradual downhill to a gradual uphill incline, as runners head northward along Cole Road to the intersection with Ten Mile Creek Road.

Runners hit a quick downhill right after passing the mile 9 marker as they turn onto Ten Mile Creek Road, but then the course begins another long, gradual uphill for the next 3 miles as they make their way along the race's home stretch toward the finish line back at the prison.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled near the mountains known locally as the Boise foothills in southwestern Idaho, the city of Boise typically experiences mild to moderately cool (and occasionally quite cold) weather conditions in the early fall season, and usually relatively low precipitation throughout the year. In October, the city's average monthly temperatures range between 64°F and 41°F, while precipitation amounts average about three quarters of an inch for the month.
