Event Details

Officially titled the "All-American Sawtelle Stampede Fun Run," this race takes runners on a tour of the gorgeous natural beauty of the Caribou-Targhee National Forest just to the west of town, along a 13.1-mile course that winds through dirt forest roads. Featuring a half-marathon, 10K, 5K for runners and walkers and a 1K race for kids, the Sawtelle Stampede races have become an annual fourth-of-July tradition here in this corner of western Idaho, as the 2009 event will mark the race's 13th annual running.

All races in the event feature out-and-back courses that start and finish on Sawtelle Peak Road, near the intersection with Forest Service Road 455, which is located just a few minutes' drive from Island Park off Interstate 20. Runners will need to be prepared to run a high-elevation race, as the starting line lies at about 6,600 feet above sea level -- and while there are uphill and downhill stretches along the course, the race route won't vary too much from the 6,000-ft. elevation.

Along the course, runners can expect to encounter a variety of different forest road and trail surfaces, from double-track to single-track trails as well as thickly forested stretches and wide-open meadows to run through. Runners also can expect to see streams they'll cross and run alongside during the race, which organizers add offers plenty of shade for much of the race thanks to the tree canopy overhead. And in keeping with the theme of the holiday, there will be a patriotic celebration at the start of the race with music and singing in the shadow of nearby Sawtelle Mountain.

Both during the race and while they're in town, runners have an opportunity to take in the breathtaking views of one of the country's most unique landscapes. Island Park lies on top of a caldera, a large flat spot surrounded by mountains and formed millions of years ago by the same volcanic eruptions that created what we know today as Yellowstone National Park, which lies just to the town's east in Wyoming. Thanks to its unusually abundant precipitation (compared to other towns at similar elevations in the region), Island Park enjoys a wealth of lush, green meadows and trees as well as streams, lakes and ponds.

July also is typically among the driest months of the year in Island Park, as rainfall totals average about 1.6 inches for the month.
