Idaho > St. Joe River Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K
St. Maries, ID • Sunday, June 8, 2014 • Course Map
Nestled among the mountains of the Idaho panhandle, near the confluence of the Saint Joe and the Saint Maries Rivers, runners will make their way along a beautifully scenic route that winds along the river at the inaugural running of the St. Joe River Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K, which follows an out-and-back course that starts and finishes just blocks from the river near this small northern Idaho city's downtown.
Runners will start all three races in Eleanor Park, which lies just off the banks of the river at the intersection of 11th Street and West Idaho Avenue. From there, runners in the half marathon (like those in the other two races) follow a route that winds first northward along 10th Street and then southeast along St. Joe Avenue, all the way down to College Avenue.
The course follows the river in the early going, giving runners a preview of the route later in the race. However, after the brief stretch along the river the route next veers left onto Milwaukee Road, which runners then follow for roughly the next mile until they turn onto St. Joe Lane. This they'll follow again for roughly another mile until they meet up with Railroad Grade Road, which brings them close once again to the banks of the St. Joe River, which they'll follow roughly in parallel for the remainder of the first half of the race.
Fast and flat, the course for the half experiences only small changes in elevation throughout the race as they make their way eastward along Railroad Grade Road, following the turns and bends in the river all the way to the half-way turnaround point. Here, those running the full marathon continue on eastward while those running the half make the turn and head back along the exact route they've just run, all the way back in to downtown St. Maries for the race finish back at Eleanor Park.
Organizers note that while the early miles are made of paved surfaces, as they are roads through the city, once runners turn onto Railroad Grade Road the surface becomes a mostly flat gravel surface. Runners re-join the paved surfaces, of course, in the last few miles of the race on the return route back to the finish.
Just over 420 runners crossed the finish line in all three races combined at its 2013 running, including more than 150 finishers in the half marathon alone.
