Event Details

Just over 200 runners crossed the finish line in all three races combined -- with more than 150 in the half marathon alone -- at the spring 2009 running of the Sun Valley U.S. Half Marathon, 12K & 5K, which marked the event's fifth annual running here in this ski resort town in central southern Idaho. Filled with awe-inspiring scenery in all directions thanks to the Rocky Mountain peaks that spread far and wide, the race takes runners along many stretches of the Sun Valley & Wood River trail system, a paved bicycle, walking and running trail that winds along the roads, streams and rivers throughout the local area.

With an out-and-back loop course that starts and finishes on the grassy field in front of the Sun Valley Lodge in Sun Valley Village, the race takes runners on a clockwise loop around the resort area, including stretches through the Elkhorn Golf Club, the Elkhorn Resort and the neighborhoods and city streets of the nearby town of Ketchum. Throughout the race route, runners follow either paved roads or paved trails and bike paths.

Runners arriving from out-of-town need to be prepared to run a high-elevation race, as the course elevation ranges from about 6,400 feet above sea level at its highest point to about 5,800 feet at its lowest. The race's toughest stretches -- its most challenging hills -- occur early in the race, as runners ascend from the starting line area up toward the Elkhorn Village, passing by Dollar Mountain along the way. The course climbs roughly 200 feet in elevation along this stretch, but thankfully is followed by more than three miles of easy, downhill terrain.

The race's second major hill occurs in the second half of the race, as the course climbs an estimated 100 feet in elevation around the area where Saddle Road and Interstate 75 intersect. The last few miles of the race, organizers note, provide some of its most stunning scenery as well as a rest from the hills, as the final few miles take runners on an out-and-back stretch along Sun Valley Road to Trail Creek, where they reach the turnaround point between miles 11 and 12 and then head back to the Sun Valley Lodge for the finish.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled among the southern Rocky Mountains near the center of southern Idaho, the resort town of Sun Valley typically experiences mild to moderately cool and sometimes cold temperatures in the late spring season, with relatively steady precipitation throughout the year, both rain and snowfall, as the area is well-known for its skiing. In May, the area's average monthly temperatures range between 63°F and 32°F, while precipitation totals average about 1.8 inches for the month.
