Event Details

Just over 3,000 runners crossed the finish line at the early summer 2009 running of the inaugural 13.1 Marathon Chicago, part of a series of "13.1"-themed race events across the country throughout the year, including half-marathon races in Atlanta, Miami and Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The course for the race makes use of some of Chicago's most famous real estate, its long and winding trails, roads and city parks along the shoreline looking out onto the blue waters of Lake Michigan.

From the starting line at the South Shore Cultural Center, which lies within the green, grassy confines of the surrounding golf course of the South Shore Country Club, runners follow an out-and-back course that takes them northward along South Shore Drive, Marquette Drive and South Coast Guard Drive into Jackson Park. Runners then follow the trails around the waterside through the park, exiting the park at the Museum of Science and Industry and returning back onto Lake Shore Drive.

The race route continues northward along the lakeshore, hugging the waterfront as it takes runners along the paved pathways along the lake all the way up to the turnaround point at Chicago's historic Burnham Park, whose construction dates back to the 1890s and which served as the site for the Worlds Fair that Chicago hosted in 1934. The park also is home to Promontory Point, a man-made peninsula that sticks out into Lake Michigan and features some of the most scenic waterfront views anywhere along the lake.

After making the turnaround inside Burnham Park, runners start the second half of the race all the way back to the finish line at the South Shore Cultural Center, this time sticking to the lakeshore paths and trails for the entire route back toward the finish. To keep runners' spirits up, organizers place cheerleading and music/DJ stations at various spots along the course, which of course are joined by plenty of spectactors to cheer them on. The 13.1 races are also intentionally limited to 5,000 runners in each event, to provide a race atmosphere that has an energetic feel without the massive crowds of the huge, big-city races.

Race Weather & Climate

Frequently breezy in the early summer thanks to its location right on the waterfront of Lake Michigan, Chicago typically experiences mild to moderately warm temperatures in early June, when the area's average monthly temperatures range between 80°F and 61°F. The city also sees its wettest weather of the year on average in June, when rainfall totals average about 4.3 inches for the month.

Fees
