Event Details

Run along a mixture of tree-lined streets and open-field country roads, often with stalks of corn waving along either side of the highway, the EffingHalf Marathon was run for the first time ever in 2007, taking runners on a tour of the occasionally hilly back country roads surrounding Lake Sara, a 586-acre lake that lies just to the northwest of the center of town.

Just before the start of last year's inaugural race, weather conditions were cloudy and rainy (as shown in these race photos from the event). But nearly as soon as the race got underway, the clouds lifted a bit and the rain stopped, allowing the more than 50 runners who took off from the starting line at the 7:30 AM start time an enjoyable run. The race starts and finishes at Lake Sara Beach, and takes runners around the entire lake, along 1600th Avenue, Lake Sara Road, Park Avenue, 1500th and 700th Road for the finish.

For a race with such a small field and a newly-organized road race at that, last year's participants report that it was well organized, with plenty of water and refreshment stations (available at each mile marker). There was also a post-race party with food and sports drinks aplenty, as well as ample carbs like bananas, bagels, cookies and power bars.

The Effingham half marathon is just one of a series of races run throughout the year in the local area, including triathlons like the May Madness Sprint (quarter-mile swim, 13-mile bike ride and 3.1-mile run), the Cutting Edge Half Classic (1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride and 13.1-mile run) in June and the Mid August Meltdown (same distances as the May Madness Sprint).

Race Weather & Climate

Situated in the southern central portion of the state, about 100 miles northeast of St. Louis, Mo., the town of Effingham typically enjoys mild to moderately cool weather in the waning days of summer and early days of fall. In September, monthly temperatures average between 78°F and 55°F, while rainfall amounts average around 3.04 inches for the month (among its drier months of the year on average).
