Event Details

Set for its inaugural running in the late summer/early fall of 2009, Effingham's Heartland Half Marathon & 5K Run/Walk will take runners along a combination of tree-lined streets and open-field country roads in and around this southern Illinois town, which lies roughly midway between St. Louis to the southwest and Indianapolis to the northeast.

The race takes the place of the EffingHalf Marathon, which was run on the same September weekend in 2007 and 2008, and featured a course that took runners along the occasionally hilly back country roads surrounding Lake Sara, a 586-acre lake that lies just to the northwest of the center of town.

The 13.1-mile course for the new Heartland Half Marathon starts and finishes near Effingham High School on West Grove Avenue, and follows an out-and-back route that takes the field first northward into town, along West Grove to the turn onto Maple Street, which runners follow all the way north to Holiday Drive. Runners then turn left onto Henrietta Street and then again onto St. Anthony Avenue, finishing the first three miles of the race after turning back onto Maple Street and heading south.

The next nine miles of the race feature long straightaway stretches along Effingham's Raney Street, East 1200th Avenue and along the road that parallels portions of Interstate 57, with a quick loop along Wernsing Avenue and Heartland Avenue thrown in along the way southward to the turnaround point, which lies about midway between the mile 8 and 9 markers. After the turnaround, runners head back northward along the roads they've just run, all the way back up to the finish line just a block away from the high school.

While runners can expect a few gently rolling hills along the route, most of the course is flat and fast, and is made up of paved surfaces throughout the race. Prospective participants should note also that the 5K is open to both runners and walkers, while the half marathon is for runners only.
