Event Details

Run on a course that takes runners through the city streets, bicycle trails and parklands of this affluent suburb of the Chicagoland area, just a short drive west from its much larger neighboring city to the west, the Oak Brook Half Marathon marks just its second annual running on Labor Day 2009. Limited to 2,000 entrants, the race features a course that will be mostly familiar to runners who ran it 2008, except with a few changes to incorporate more parkland and trail running areas and fewer stretches along city streets.

The race starting line lies just a stone's throw from the finish, just above Oak Brook's Central Park right in the heart of the village area. From there, runners turn right onto Jorie Boulevard and then left onto 31st Street, which they run for a quick stretch before turning left again into the Oak Brook Polo Grounds, which hosts polo matches between world-class polo teams every Sunday during the summer, between July and September.

The course turns into paths through the polo grounds at this point, filled with wooded forest areas and ponds, and bordered by both the nearby Butler National Golf Course and the McDonald's Corporate Campus. The route then heads back through Central Park and over to the westernmost part of the course, which runs along Kingston Drive and Midwest Road, along the edges of Oak Brook's Butterfield Country Club.

After making their way past the course's fairways and trees to 31st Street, runners turn left onto 31st and head east toward along parkland section of the course, into Fullersburg Park, where they run along the crushed limestone trails of the Fullersburg Woods. These sections of the course include its hilliest stretches, though the gently rolling hills don't pose too much of a challenge for most runners. The race's last three miles take runners around Oak Brook Golf Club, along the bike and running path that takes the field back to Central Park for the finish.

Race Weather & Climate

A suburban neighborhood of Chicago, located roughly 20 miles west of the city's downtown area, the village of Oak Brook typically experiences mild to moderately warm (and occasionally still quite warm) weather conditions in the late summer and early fall, and usually drier weather in September than in the summer months. In September, the area's average monthly temperatures range between 78°F and 53°F, while rainfall totals average just under 3.4 inches for the month.
