Details
Now a Labor Day weekend tradition in this wooded preserve just north of
the Chicagoland metropolitan area, the Runner's Edge Trail Half
Marathon offers a hilly, forested escape from the city through
Libertyville's Old School Forest Preserve with about 750
or so fellow running enthusiasts, most of whom hail from the local
area. Much of the mostly shaded race course is run along the town's
stretch of the Des Plaines River, along a
well-groomed, crushed gravel trail.
From the starting point inside the forest preserve, runners follow an
out-and-back 13.1-mile trail course that takes them throughout the
woods of both the Old School Preserve and the nearby Weight Woods. Race
organizers report that the trail is often narrow, and that race
participants must remember to be courteous to other trail walkers,
hikers and runners, as the trail will not be closed during the race.
(It will be open for the race, however, for two and a half hours.)
The race is limited to 750 runners (and is open to runners only, no
walkers) so it's a good idea to register online well in advance of race
day, as the event usually fills up before the day of the race. The
starting time for the Runner's Edge trail race is 8:15 AM.
