Event Details

More than 1,600 runners, walkers and wheelchair participants came out to compete in and enjoy last year's running of the Evansville Half Marathon, which will celebrate its fifth anniversary in 2008. Run through the city streets and neighborhoods of this city in the southwesternmost corner of the state, the race starts and finishes in parkland overlooking the big, beautiful ribbon-like Ohio River that cuts through the city and marks its border with Kentucky to the south.

From the starting line at Reitz Hill, which overlooks the water from the Red Bank side of the river, the point-to-point course takes runners along a course that's fairly hilly for the first few miles and then flattens out -- still with quite a number of gentle, rolling hills, however -- over the last several miles. Participants encounter the steepest hills of the race (and its highest elevations) between the start and the second mile marker; after the third mile marker, the course begins a long, steady stretch toward the finish.

Along the way, participants are treated to several of the city's most well-known sights and attractions, including Garvin Park, Bosse Field, Main Street and the Evansville Walkway, Bayard and Akin Parks and the last, finishing mile along the city's Riverfront Park. All participants -- runners, walkers and wheelchair competitors -- need to be aware that the course closes after four and a half hours, and several parts of the course remain open to traffic throughout the race.

Organizers also have the spectator areas humming with activity throughout the race, with rock, jazz and R&B bands performing along the course as well as Evansville's Youth Philarmonic Orchestra. Also throughout the weekend, the city will celebrate a week-long outdoor fall street festival, the West Side Nut Club Fall Festival, which culminates in the main parade on Saturday.

Race Weather & Climate

From its perch overlooking the Ohio River and Indiana's southernmost border with Kentucky just a stone's throw across the river, the city of Evansville tends to experience early fall weather that ranges from pleasantly mild to cool (and sometimes cold) conditions. In October, monthly temperatures average between 72°F and 48°F, while rainfall amounts average around 2.96 inches for the month (making it the area's driest month of the year).
