Details
Part of a weekend-long series of sporting events that run under the
banner of the inaugural Fort Wayne Fort-4-Fitness Health Festival, this
half marathon and four-mile race offers runners the chance to run a
certified 13.1-mile half-marathon course in this city's first-ever race
of this kind. A showcase for the city, the race course follows an
out-and-back route through the city streets of Fort Wayne, taking
runners past many of its most picturesque neighborhoods and urban parks
at the time of year when the autumn leaves are just beginning to turn.
Freimann Square in downtown Fort Wayne serves as the starting and
finishing lines for the race, and runners take off from there at the
7:30 AM starting time for the first couple of miles along West Main
Street and Wayne Street. They make the turn through the second and
third miles around the eastern and western portions of Swinney Park,
and then back along Main Street towards Guildin Park, crossing over the
St. Mary's River on the way.
In the second half of the race, the course takes runners northward
above the riverbend and into the part of the city known as the North
Highland neighborhood, passing by Hamilton Park along the way. The race
reaches a turnaround point of sorts once it enters Franke Park, a
330-acre urban park that houses several miles of hiking and walking
trails, fishing areas on Shoaff Lake, and the Fort Wayne Children's
Zoo.
After making a loop through Franke Park, runners then begin the last
few miles' stretch back toward the finish line downtown, running a long
straightaway stretch along North Wells Street, then turning on High
Street and Sherman Boulevard to cross back over the river into
downtown. Runners then finish with the last few hundred yards along
Main Street, and cross the finish line at Freimann Square.
Because it takes place entirely on paved surfaces throughout Fort
Wayne's downtown and nearby neighborhoods, the course is mostly fast
and flat, with a few gentle hills along the way. The half marathon is
open to runners only, while the 4-mile race is open to both runners and
walkers.
