Event Details

The 2009 running of Indianapolis's Geist Half Marathon & 5K turned out to be just as a big a hit with the local running community as the previous year, as more than 4,800 runners and walkers crossed the finish line in the race's 2009 running. With its tree-lined course around the Geist Reservoir that sits just northeast of the city, it isn't hard to see what has made this race a popular one -- ample views of the 1,800-acre Geist lake throughout most of the course, which takes runners over five bridges and along the winding roads that surround the southern half of the reservoir.

From the starting line on the Olio Road bridge, runners and walkers (the race is open to both) follow the course southward over the bridge and down to the intersection with Springstone Road, where they turn right and head westward through the residential neighborhoods bounded by lakefront homes all around. The course follows Springstone to 96th Street, and then turns and heads over the water across the second bridge along the route, for the stretch of the race that takes runners on a counter-clockwise loop around the southern end of the reservoir.

Runners follow Fall Creek Road all the way around the edges of the lake to 79th Street and then onto Fox Road, turning north when they hit Oaklandon Road. All throughout the early and middle stretches of the race, participants encounter numerous rolling hills, but no major hills to speak of -- from the starting line elevation of just under 800 feet above sea level, the course never drops below about 750 feet or climbs above 850 feet above sea level. The only really significant hill occurs between mile markers 8 and 9, where the course rises sharply as runners hit the ninth mile; the final mile of the course features a generous downhill stretch.

As the last few miles of the course wind their way through the homes and tree-lined roads of the reservoir's southern banks, runners meet up with Old Stone Road and North 700 on their way to the final stretch of the race at the Fall Creek Road bridge, which takes them over to the finish line at the Geist Marina. All throughout the race route, organizers add, participants will get to take their minds off their running regularly thanks to the "spirit squads," local bands, and local school bands stationed throughout the course.
