Event Details

This year's running of the Indianapolis Marathon & Half Marathon, the event's 13th annual, will see the addition of three new road race events for the estimated 6,000 participants race organizers expect to draw in 2008 -- a marathon relay, 5K Run/Walk and a Kids Marathon, a one-mile fun run for children ages five and under. Mostly fast and flat and run on a combination of paved roads and wooded bicycle trails, the race takes participants through the gorgeous Fort Harrison State Park at the peak of the seasonal turning of the autumn leaves.

The out-and-back course for the half-marathon starts and finishes on Otis Avenue just inside the local street known as the Lawton Loop, which lies on the outskirts of the state park. From there, the course follows a somewhat zigzag path through Lawrence's city streets, including long, flat straightaway stretches along East 56th Street, North Post Road and East 59th Street. Runners will encounter some rolling hills around mile markers 3 and 5, and the most significant hill lies within the park around mile marker 10, where they run through the park's forest along improved mountain bike trails.

After runners enter and exit Fort Harrison State Park, they then make their way back toward the finish line along Lee Road and East 59th Street, where the half-marathoners split off from the full marathoners for the finish line back on Otis Avenue. (The full marathoners have another 13 miles to go, along Fall Creek Parkway.)

The half and full marathons start promptly at 8:30 AM, while the 5K and Kids Marathon races begin at 9:10 AM and 10:00 AM, respectively. The half marathon course closes at 11:47 AM, while the full marathon course will close at 2:37 PM.
