Indiana > Heritage Trail Marathon, Half Marathon & Quarter Marathon
West Lafayette, IN • Sunday, September 29, 2012 • Course Map
The dirt trails that wind through the woods of northwestern Indiana along the 13-mile Heritage Trail are the setting for the early springtime running of the Heritage Trail races, which will feature a full slate of trail race distances including a full, 26.2-mile marathon and a a 13.1-mile half marathon as well as a 15K and 5K race.
Designed as both a recreational trail and a way to highlight some of the state's most notable pre-Civil-War-era historic sites -- including Tippecanoe Battlefield Park in Battle Ground at the trail's northern end and Tapawingo Park near its southern end in the city of West Lafayette -- the Heritage Trail's 13 miles feature both paved sections as well as single-track dirt trails through the forested areas of the parks along the trail.
Limited to 500 runners in past years, the race takes runners from the starting line at the Fort Quiantenon entrance to the trail near West Lafayette on an out-and-back race route that will feature some rolling hills, especially along the stretches of the race that take runners alongside the winding Wabash River that flows between Battle Ground and Lafayette.

Located in the state's northeastern corner, roughly 8 miles north of Lafayette and about 70 miles northwest of Indianapolis, West Lafayette typically sees September temperatures that average between 55°F and 78°F, while rainfall totals average just over 2.5 inches for the month.
