Details
Challenging, hilly terrain over northern Indiana's scenic rural,
country roadways are the signature features at the Pumpkin Chase Road
Race series of running events, which include a 13.1-mile half marathon,
10K and 5K races and a 2K walk, all of which are part of the Bristol
Sports Festival held each fall in this small upstate Indiana town of
the same name.
A smaller, more intimate race (the 2006 race drew fewer than 100
runners for the half marathon), the Pumpkin Chase Road Race takes
participants on an out-and-back course starting at Bonneyville Mill
County Park just outside Bristol, and follows a roughly clockwise loop
through the countryside south of the park. Runners follow County Roads
131, 33, 14 and 27 before making their way onto County Road 8 for the
home stretch back to the finish line.
As suggested by the race's name, the course takes runners on paved
surfaces throughout the race -- there are no off-road trails of any
kind. The race also has a later starting time than most running events;
registration closes at 12:30 PM and the race starting time is at 1:00
PM.
The race also includes an event for cyclists, the Falling Leaves Bike
Ride 10K, 25K and 50K races, which take place the
following day (Sunday this year, a change from last year's race, when
the bike ride preceded the running events).

Weather & Climate
Located in the northernmost part of the state just a few miles from the
border with Michigan and about a half-hour's drive from nearby South
Bend, the town of Bristol tends to see moderately warm to cool weather
in the early fall, with occasional wet weather. In September,
temperatures average between 76°F and 54°F, while
rainfall averages just over 3.5 inches for the month.
