Indiana > Seymour Mini Marathon
Seymour, IN • Saturday, May 4, 2013 • Course Map
This small Indiana city that's often called the "crossroads of America" thanks to the north-south and east-west railroad lines that cross in its downtown -- and is perhaps even more famous for being the hometown of famed singer-songwriter John Mellencamp -- hosts the fourth annual running of its half marathon race in the spring of 2013.
Following the race's inaugural running in 2010, which saw just over 70 runners cross the finish line, the Seymour Mini Marathon welcomes runners back for a fourth time this year for a run along an out-and-back loop course that, with the exception of a slight hilly stretch around the mid-point of the race.
The race starts and finishes next to the campus of Seymour High School on Community Drive, just west of the city's downtown. From there, runners first head north toward the nearby town of Rockford, making their way along turns onto South Drive, East Drive and West 7th Street before heading onto Elm Street and then onto North County Road 760, which brings runners up into the rural farmland and countryside just north of the city.
Flat and wide-open, with farm fields dotted only by houses and barns, this part of the race offers up a portrait of the places Mellencamp wrote about in songs like "Small Town" and "Pink Houses." Once runners make their way up to East County Road 975, they make the turn and then head onto County Road 700, which brings them south and reconnects with 760 for the stretch back toward Seymour.
After a few turns on streets just west of downtown, runners finish the race right back where they started, at Seymour High School. Runners and walkers both are welcome at the event, which also doubles as a benefit for the locally based Red Sky Rescue dog shelter. Runners are asked to bring any of a variety of dog food, toys and accessories with them on race day, including rawhide bones, Purina dog and/or puppy chow, and bedding towels and blankets, among other items.
