Details
The tree-lined streets of the campus of Indiana's legendary University
of Notre Dame are the setting for the 2008 Sunburst
Races Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K & 5K, which will welcome
more than 2,000 runners and walkers to what will be the event's 25th
annual running this year. Run on a course that's mostly fast and flat
through the streets of South Bend and along the St. Joseph River, the
race is considered well-suited for both experienced runners as well as
newbies looking to run their first marathon or half-marathon event.
Both the full- and half-marathon participants begin their races at the
same starting line, which lies in front of the College Football Hall of
Fame on St. Joseph Street. From there, the race takes both full and
half participants along the same course for the first three miles
before reaching Keller Park, where the half-marathon runners then split
off from the full 26.2-mile race participants. The course for the half
then winds through the city, re-joining the full marathon course at
Niles Avenue, and following it all the way to the finish line at the
Notre Dame campus.
Though there are no really significant hills along the course, there
are a few small inclines runners will encounter, especially in the
race's first three miles and the last two miles. There will also be
water stations distributed at each mile marker along the half marathon
course (as well as along the full marathon course).
The race is run entirely on paved surfaces, along city streets and
off-road bicycle pathways, and is certified by U.S.A. Track and Field
as well as being a qualifying race for the 2009 running of the Boston
Marathon.

Weather & Climate
With its typically moderately warm to pleasantly cool springtime
conditions, the city of South Bend tends to see weather that's
well-suited for running this time of year. On the day of the race in
late May, temperatures range from a high of 78°F to a low of
57°F, with a racetime average temperature of around
65°F. Rainfall amounts for the month average around 3.5 inches.
