Details
The rolling hills and expansive green pastures of northern Indiana's
Amish country are the setting for the Elkhart area's 28th running of
its annual springtime sports event, the Great Race, a series of
running, walking, cycling, canoeing, swimming, in-line skating and
other sports events over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. The event's
Amish Country Half Marathon Run is just one of more than 30 race events
which participants can sign up for over the weekend, and is open to
both runners and walkers at all skill levels.
Though the half-marathon itself fields a relatively small group of
participants (90 runners and walkers crossed the finish line at last
year's race), the event attracts hundreds of participants to the full
slate of events. The half marathon starts at 7:50 AM, which means that
participants will need to arrive in Elkhart anytime after 5:30 AM for
the bus to the starting line, or show up at the Goshen Middle School
for the start.
The race begins at the middle school in Goshen, which lies just to the
southeast of Elkhart, and follows a point-to-point route over a mixture
of country roads and local highways toward the finish line at Concord
Mall, which lies just south of Elkhart. The first half of the course
includes a few relatively challenging hills and some long straightaway
stretches, and flattens out in the second half of the race, especially
along the stretch of South Main Street on the way to the finish.

Weather & Climate
Located about 10 miles southeast of Elkhart in the northernmost part of
the state, just a half-hour's drive from nearby South Bend, the town of
Goshen experiences pleasantly mild to cool weather conditions in
mid-spring, with occasional wet weather. In May, temperatures average
between 73°F and 49°F, while rainfall amounts average
around 3.39 inches for the month.
